JRF Foundation, (Joseph Rowntree Foundation) is an independent social change organisation working to solve UK poverty.
It has a number of reports looking at community and social spaces and interactions which I felt would be useful for my research.
The reports I thought were valuable are listed below
Annotated hard copies of all reports can be found in my A4 sketchbook.
The Social Value of Public Space
The report looks at different forms of public spaces. It talks about allotments, high streets and car boot sales as some of the examples of public space. The report speaks about the connection of different cultures in these spaces and the need for people to make the space work, "people make places more that places make people". It also states how through public space in neighbourhoods is in face expanding and how there is a need for these spaces to link back to local distinctiveness and usability in the spaces. The report holds a list of key pointers for making a good public space which I feel will help with my methodology of the projects and the spaces these sit in.
Landscapes of helping: Kindliness in neighbourhoods and communities
This report focuses on Hebden Bridge and the mix or both people and tools that have been used to develop the community feel in the space, in the report they refer to this as 'kindliness'. There is also a list of conditions that can help develop community and kindliness, one being hubs of helping which I think really resonated and reflected back on the structure of my project with the main hub and smaller projects.
How Well You Know Your Neighbours?
-The above report focused on a lady trying to make changes in her local neighbourhood. She kept a diary of progress between easter and halloween in 2015.
-The report shows how she thinks about what changes she can make for others, but then also realises that she needs her neighbours too at times.
-The report has some interesting parts, I have highlighted these in the hard copy which can be found in my A4 sketchbook.
