During the St Brides, Letterpress in the time of Covid talk, the designer Ben Blount spoke about a series of posters he had designed and printed. These posters were called, White supremacy is... and answered this comment in 18 different ways including, 'is intentional' and 'is all the rage'.
This made me think of Candy Changs work in which she used a blackboard to ask communities the question, 'before I die, I want to..'
To use the WeType I am developing and see how it reads I decided to make a poster reflecting on these inspirations. Ive decided to start with the phrase,
Community is...
to start conversations around this..
This was my first attempt, looking at what it may look like if i developed the print as a letterpress, similar to my first allotment prints..
I then looked at how this would look using the WeType and I think to develop this I would print it on the Riso to really take advantage of the overlays in colour..
Im happy with how the WeType is looking so far, its legible and has a distinct look. I need to think about where would be best to distribute these posters, and if I would want contributors to use the WeType or their normal handwriting to respond. If they were to use their normal handwriting, it may be that I then develop their responses using the WeType.
