Morag Myerscoughs temporary installation at Housesteads Roman Fort
The structure was designed to be close to what would have one stood in place at the fort and to show the views surrounding the space that the Romans would have once seen.
The work was developed with a poet, Ellen Moran and the words were developed and picked in workshops with the community.
The boards were also painted by the local community, and showed their thoughts and feelings to the space
When looking to find information about visiting the installation, there was a post from English Heritage in which they promoted the artwork. There was a lot of controversy and negativity from people saying about the bright colours, that it was out of place at the fort and that fund to English Heritage were misspent.
I felt that the installation, was very impactful, and had connected with the community very well in its making. There was a video explaining the artistic process and this emphasised the explanation for the use of strong colours.
Morags work is impactful and I think the way it has connected many this summer. Morag kept her visual style yet made sure that the community involved were connected and empowered by the works.
Photos here show the view, structure and how the pieces were connected to the scaffold
