Protest Pack - Aesthetics and Research

Updated: Jan 23, 2021

Will Mower - Alpha Set

Will Mower is a Brighton based artist, designer and printmaker.

Influenced by the way children use play as a tool for learning Will has looked at how to develop playful exercises in his work. He has developed modular systems and used simple geometric shapes in his work and used play within his printmaking.

I bought an Alpha Set for Print Club in my technician role and Ive looked at the pack as part of my protest pack research.

Contains 16 rubber stamps,

40-page typebook and black ink pad

-The pack inspired me to think of different ways of play when making the protest posters, how the pack will be displayed and what materials I will use the create each stamp.

-I really like the playful side of this pack, the only negative when reflecting on my project, if there were a lot of posters to make, or many words to the posters it would take a lot of time to use a modular system like Will has.

-I think by using the top words and mixing them up with singular type, it is a good balance. I started to to look in another post about imagery to sit alongside and with the type, so inspired by Wills pack I may add geometric shapes the create images or pattern on the posters.

-Packaged in cardboard box, shows modular patterns on the side of box

-Ringbound Typebook contains alphabet letters and numbers and shows which blocks to use to create each and in which order

-Cardboard laser cut inserts for each block to sit in

-Front page of book contains message that I like, encouraging creativity- "Feel free to ignore this booklet entirely and see what you can create"

-The stamp pieces are made from grey rubber and varnished plywood

-I was unsure how the rubber would print, but they create a beautiful texture and clean down really well

-Ive printed 3 of the top protest words, collated in a previous post with the Alpha Blocks to see how they looked using this method

-I love how the W bottom section overlays and the piece to create the middle of the B is really aesthetically pleasing

-It was harder than I thought it would be to keep things straight!

-I really like the texture created when using the stamp pad provided and the rubber stamping surface, it gives each piece a lot of interest and a handmade aesthetic
