I have recently become involved in designing imagery within a local school allotment plot. I have been in conversation with the teacher leading the project and have agreed to help to add designs to the space.
The school hope that the allotment space will be used by the local community and that parents and grandparents of the children will help out at the space. They hope to reduce the waste used in the school and they are sharing their work with a school in Nepal as part of connection classrooms which is ran by the British Council.
This is going to be one of the small projects within my MA work and the project may use some of the tools from the hub, or may in turn create more tools from the creation on designs and developments.
The children within the school are going to create a series of drawings around the themes of growing and the teacher is also keen to use some rainbow images in the space.
When I visited the space we have also spoken about printing a welcome sign to the space, adding images within the shed space and printing bunting. I have suggested making a workshop sheet or information sheet about the allotment, again using the imagery created by the children.
I need to look into the safest inks for use outside as the usual water-based inks I would use may not be as long lasting in the space. I have asked in a few screen printing forums I'm in and it does seem to be veering towards solvent based inks, but obviously I would prefer to sue water-based if this is possible.
