Small Project. Allotment. Paper Choices.

Updated: Aug 16, 2021

I attended a workshop with Jessica Grady, an embroidery artist a few months ago.

She uses 3D embroidery techniques in her work and is a huge advocate of using scrap stores and recycled materials. Jessica uses a lot of hardware materials such as washers and dyed tile separators in both her work and workshops. Jessica had advised us within the workshops of local scrap stores (stores which sell waste products and materials from factories and industry) and I wanted to make use of them as much as possible within my project.

I visited this website..

to get a list of the scrap stores in the UK. From that I found that there was a scrap store in Middlesbrough,

I visited this one but wasn't too impressed, I used to visit a scrap store in Newcastle which was constantly updated and always had very interesting objects in, maybe its because of covid that the Percy store was poor at the moment but I wasn't able to get anything for the projects.

I then visited the Hull scrap store

I was really pleased to find lots of GF Smith paper as their factory is in Hull! I have family in Hull so visit quite often so I think this will definitely be a great source of materials for my projects. It means I am using recycled materials that could have otherwise gone to landfill.

This visit I bought some white paper offcuts and a pack of 300gsm coloured recycled card

And another highlight were these stamps (£1!!), I think I may print the shapes with quite dry ink to get lots of texture, scan them in and work them into some of the repeats as background repeat shapes and patterns..

Inspired by Jessica Grady, I'm going to use these papers from the scrap store for my small projects and hopefully acquire most of my papers through this source.

The idea of using the materials available at the time from the scrap store for workshops etc really appeals too and fits in with the ethics of how I wish to source the materials I use.
