WE Viewfinder

Updated: Jan 31, 2021

Whilst looking at this idea from George Leaney a copywriter in London I was inspired to look at my own way of reinterpreting this idea. The DS3 launch included a campaign in which the first 100 people who ordered a car joined the 100 club and got the chance to customise their car using a viewfinder in the shape of their roof. They could take a shot through the viewfinder to see if it would make a good roof design

Thinking about my project I want to use this idea to think about what protest/proaction can be through this viewfinder window. Because of the new lockdown Ive stalled the smaller plot project themes and not asked outwardly for themes around these. I think by sending people these viewfinders, and creating mini projects from the main hub this will in turn create the themes and conversations.

WeViewfinder. (WeView?)

To be sent to the participant in the post, or a PDF to be sent and printed out by the participant.

Take an A4 piece of card, and cut out the centre WE creating a viewfinder.

Whilst on your lockdown walk or in your home/workplace take images through the viewfinder to show what you would like change, images of what community is to you or what is an important part of your lockdown experience

Ask participants for permissions to sue on social media, i think these would make a very striking Instagram wall, repeated with the same logo but then many different images contained within.

Ive taken my Walter and Edith logo into two colourways. The left, black image is to be used if the participant wishes to print out at home and has no black card, the right white image is a guideline of the do have black card

f-Shots at dusk, so are not very strong at all, but I wanted to try it on late afternoon walk

-I printed this example onto 200gsm paper, and it was very flimsy outside, especially with the cutout section making it weaker. I need to buy black card, and make sure the cut will not show a white edge. I could think about laser cutting a set, but how would this then be given out to participants, to make it as accessible as possible would be best to have as many participants as possible.

-I need to also remember to print it on a much higher printer quality setting as there is a lot of banding which is then visible in the photos.

-I also need to think and play about with scale, the image needs to be square in its whole to be able to be posted to social media without editing,

-How big does the logo need to be and what effect does that make on how close you need to be to what you are photographing through?

Focus issues, maybe I need to ask to photograph with surroundings in, like DS3 grass shot about and then crop?

Edited to show how better quality print would work

-WeView would work well as a name, made a mock up below of how that may look, which also got me thinking about possibilities of making a Walter and Edith Typeface?

-Use a set square on the A4 paper so that people would make sure to include that full area in their shot ready to be cropped for social media

-Small WeView logo at the bottom and WE in the middle to cut out to view through.

Added handle so not in the way of photo?

-Newer 220gsm black card, the texture on this cheaper card works really well and will add extra interest in the images

-Feels more rigid to hold. Need to try it outside to see how it holds up and also experiment with the scale of the cut out WE logo space
