WeType Developments

Over the summer, I wanted to develop the WeType font, so that I could cut a series of shapes from which the font would be created. I had worked on the font, taking inspiration from Will Mowers Alpha Set.

My font was legible than Wills and I didnt want to develop it to become more legible, my focus and priority was to use as few shapes as possible.

My first attempt below uses only the shapes in the bottom corner, but the issue when I came to make the stamps was that I then had these same shapes, but at different scales at times. I needed to develop and rectify this to make the physical stamps to print with.

My developed version of the WeType after a tutorial with Graham Mitchell looked at overlaying certain letters to create interest, and I did like this with Will Mowers set. The overlays then helped me to resolve and develop letters such as the Q which were a little tricky to do without an overlay, and also keep letters like the M as a wide font (which again I liked as I want to stay true to the shapes rather than making a regimented font) but lessen the width with the use of the overlay.

The font uses seven shapes, and there were 6 listed on the old font, but at different sizes. The full circle has gone and this would be printed using the half circle printed twice, and the W of Walter and Edith shows an edited overlaid version below too.

I next plan to cut these shapes out of lino and see how they print, also printing an overlaid version of the font on the Riso. The final WeType pack will contain a Riso print with all of the fonts on listed like below for reference.

I also wish to add a lined grid sheet as a reference for the user to place behind the paper they were printing on to line up their printed type.
