How to use creativity to get your voice heard

With

Miquita Oliver

Zing Tsjeng, Vice exec director

Andy Leek, Notes to Strangers

-Does social media help?

-Zing said, lots of posts and can get lost in feed, disheartening when you know posts that are good don't get as many likes as a holiday snap.

-Andy said, Focus on artwork and the platform doesn't matter, sometimes you see more effort in the promotion and posts than the creative content itself.

Is it a responsibility to be 'political' with a big following?

-Think about what you're posting your name behind, some companies do show/promote values but don't actually deeply connect

Examples of activism that the speakers were interested in at present..

-Instagram account, @thegodofcookery

uses images and information about chinese cooking to then develop conversations about activism and issues

-Bob Mortimer and Paul Whitehouse go fishing

Shows men opening up about their mental health, a gentle show good to see from men of their generation too

-United Zingdom podcast, what it means to be British podcast

-Does the social media response sometimes kill a project for you?

-Zing, I had 4 books to release, they were released quickly and it really knocked her as the launches were not filled. But had to remember that 1 launch does not reflect the project or book fully.

-Andy, Please yourself. You will like it and if others don't you are still happy and like it. Focus on the best bit of making it and you also need to be able to fail to then learn.

-All work is accomplished by procrastinating to do other work. Working on the tube or sending texts to yourself sometimes helps, sometimes sitting at your desk just doesnt work best.

I asked

Lockdowns have connected us to our local communities more, do Andy and Zing have any tips on connection to others and growing voices with local issues?

-Andy- Walks, discovering local shops and spaces you wouldn't see before, I hope that continues

-Zing- Mutual help. Olio App, sharing items and food for free in local community

-Make space to come back to yourself and what you're all about.

-Better to show your creativity through you.

-Shrink your presence down to the moment as much as possible.

-To Andy, do you feel restricted or defined by notes from strangers brand? It did start well but it did start to put me in a bracket and become restrictive, yes.
