Long Distance Press talk

Updated: Nov 16, 2021

Adam and Tom, who make up Long Distance Press came to give a talk at Uni last week. I thought it would be helpful for my practice so attended the session.

They both started out the Press by sending postcards to each other to collaborate on, this again reminded me of the works in Stephen Fowlers, Rubber stamping book from my previous blog post.

They said that their work merged in a visual form as they continued on collaborating over mail. The mail collaborations were because they lived at either ends of the country, they also spoke about how they felt they were also collaborating with the Royal Mail as they postcards were damaged or stamped on in the postal process.

The pair now work as a publishing duo and develop Zines etc for themselves and other artists. They use different methods and have a big focus on Riso to create these. They said that they let the process lead and don't worry about any problems that may arise with the printers etc, allowing any banding for example to add to the visuals.

It was interesting to see some examples of the works, I especially liked the way they added the info for websites and edition numbers to the Zines.

I wasn't too keen on the zines which were bound with staples as it made the pages hard to fold and felt very fragile whilst reading it.

I did enjoy the long bound zine at the bottom of the images here, reflecting the workshop Zine I made in DESM13

Going forward I think the tactile qualities of a Riso zine are again something I want to develop within my project as I think it becomes more precious and gives the object more worth.
