-The Sage, Gateshead ran a social pedagogy and inclusive practice conference in November 2021, running a hybrid, both online and in person event. I managed to get a ticket for the online conference and found it very helpful.
-I thought the conference would help develop my essay and research for it alongside the methodology for my practice. The blurb for the event mentioned a few different speakers whom I was interested in, including Nicola Golightly who works in participatory design.
There were a few speakers that talked about general teaching practices and ways in which we can engage people and children. There were some great handouts on 4 of the main social pedagogy thinkers, which I have added to the end of this blog.
During the talk there were conversations around the participation of both the teacher and the participants. It was discussed about how some of the speakers would give a little bit of information about themselves forward to open up barriers between themselves and the participants, but never anything they thought of as too private to then still draw a line of keeping your own boundaries.

There was a talk about Blue Cabin from Jenny Young, the charity helps young people who have had experience in the care system build relationships through creativity.
Pat Petrie spoke about different ways of teaching especially to young people and I found a few of her journals and books, which may come in handy for essays and further research.
I found Nicola Golightlys work most interesting and relevant to my practice. Nicola works as a participatory designer and has taken part in events such as the Middlesbrough Art Weekender. Her talk was really engaging, she works within illustration, graphics and print and also is one of the three directors of Navigator North, an organisation to help inspire artists and nurture communities in the North East.

These will be really helpful for my next module as I think I want to explore different forms of social pedagogy and different ways to approach my workshop delivery so there is a definite relationship and respect between me as the designer/maker and the participants.
